Torquay Property | Vane Tower
Perched atop the hill overlooking Torquay is Vain Tower, a remarkable property that was originally a single house but has since been divided into three residences.
Owned by an American couple, this magnificent Grade 2 listed building was acquired in November 2023. In a remarkably short period, they have skillfully renovated the Tower building and the main house, creating a truly exquisite living space. The Tower features a penthouse suite with a kitchen, living and dining area, two bathrooms, and two bedrooms – one located at the top of the tower, offering panoramic views of the bay.
The main house spans two floors, with a spacious hallway that runs the length of the property. As you enter through the impressive front doors, you are greeted by the grand dining area with a fireplace, a large dining table, and a piano. Moving through the hallway, you’ll find the kitchen and snug on the right, leading to the main living area at the end with a conservatory at the rear.
On the first floor are three bedrooms and the main family bathroom. Access to the penthouse above, which also has its own direct outdoor access to the gardens, hot tub, and breathtaking sea views, is available from here.
The staging of this property was a delightful experience. The owner, who is an interior designer and the creative mind behind the entire house, was present during the photoshoot. Collaborating with her and the photographer brought out some truly captivating images.
Typically, our photoshoots are conducted without the client’s presence, so having the owner on-site added a new dynamic to our work. It was inspiring to work with a designer who poured genuine passion into this project. Seeing the rooms through her eyes, understanding the effort put into creating them, learning about the building’s history and the project, and discovering the future plans for the property’s transformation from a wreck to a beauty was truly enlightening.
This property presented the largest staging challenge we have encountered so far. Navigating through four floors and moving various equipment boxes certainly kept me active – proof that sometimes a property can be a workout in itself!
Upon our arrival, it was clear that there was a miscommunication (from me) regarding the brief – I had prepared to style only the Penthouse, but in reality, we were tasked with styling the entire property. This unexpected twist led to a brief moment of panic as I pondered how to make it work with the volume of equipment I had brought along. But as any professional will tell you, sometimes you need to think on your feet and create a strategy to adapt to your surroundings.
We worked tirelessly throughout the entire day to transform every room with all the finishing touches required to showcase this property’s true beauty.
A testament to the owners’ dedication, this property will now be listed for short-term holiday rentals, catering to larger groups due to the spaciousness of the main house, and offering more intimate stays in the Penthouse.
Many valuable lessons were learned from this project. These included managing a sizable property, the need for meticulous planning and ensuring a thorough understanding of the brief, thinking outside the box with innovative ideas, and adapting to changes effectively.
A re-visit was required for this property due to unfavourable weather conditions on the first day of photography. The additional visit involved staging all outdoor areas to showcase the property’s full potential.
